I have heard that after Osborne fired the coaches, he told the players that the U had to cut  22% from baseball scholarships since the Big 10 operates that way and so many of their scholarships would be cut in half.  If true, this is an ugly development for NU baseball.

Also, I hear from the same source that many of the players only wanted Anderson and Erstad to go since they were micro-managers. Apparently they like Bingham and Newman.

The donors and higher ups wanted the whole staff gone.

I understand wanting to keep some members of the coaching staff, but you're not going to keep both of the paid assistants and tell the new head coach they have to keep them. A new coach is going to want to hire their own assistants.

No offense intended, but story sounds fishy with Erstad being portrayed as a micro-manager.  Also, 22% cut from scholarships doesn't make since.  I have heard the Big 10 has some funky scholarship rules but I can't imagine they would have 22% less scholarships to give out.  Currently NCAA allows baseball to give out 11.7 scholarships (can be divided up in shares  of no less than 25%) to no more than 27 of the baseball roster.  If we had to cut 22% of our scholarships, we would only be allowed to give out 9.126 scholarships to 27 players (lowest share of 25%).  If true, no wonder the Big 10 sucks in baseball.

There are some odd rules that the Big Ten has about baseball, but I've never heard anything abiut them having a lower scholarship limit than the NCAA allows. I think there may be some misunderstanding there.

Isn't there a Big Ten rule that says you can't give out the scholarship of a player who goes pro before his 4 years are up?  Or something like that, anyway.  If so, the 22% could be a cut, or maybe a projection of what we will have to give up over time.

I am just guessing here.   Smiley

Yeah, I'm not quite sure what the guy was saying to me regarding the 22% but, he was convinced that the players were told something about scholarship cuts. My source is a baseball coach (not for UNL) and he claims a player's mom told him. I guess we'll see what happens.

Personally I don't understand why 20 full scholarships shouldnt be awarded to baseball.   Yah it's not a revenue sport for the colleges,  but some people are making money off of it.   Why else would they build a brand new baseball stadium just for the frickin CWS.   Should reward the players for their time and for putting off the MLB for awhile.

Total number of athletic scholarships given to men must equal total number of athletic scholarships given to women.  This is why women's rowing teams get full rides, while a baseball player is lucky to get .25 of a scholarship.

It's a socialist rule.
