Kevin Kugler just tweeted:

Quote
Press conference at 3:30 to announce Nebraska's new baseball coach.  This will be the first former punter to be head coach at NU.

LJS is confirming.

I'm actually surprised.  I thought it'd go to one of the SEC guys.  Maybe T.O. was also looking for a coach with a vested interest to stay long term?

He deserves his shot, but this is a major disappointment and letdown. We hire a guy with one year of volunteer coaching experience. Great.

And 14 seasons in the Majors.

Reports are that Will Bolt will be coming back as the top assistant. If true, that would make the situation somewhat better. The speculation is that Erstad will be a placeholder for a few years and then Bolt will take over. I'd be surprised if Bolt came back without an expectation that he will get the head job at some point in the future.

I guess I'm not completely surprised by this hire. Can he be any worse than Anderson?

No, but I think we should have hired someone with more coaching experience.  He will be learning on the job.

I really think having Will Bolt on the staff will help. Who he hires as a pitching coach will also be a big factor.

That is a head scratcher if true.  Why hire a complete rookie as your head coach when he (or the university) won't make a long-term commitment (assuming he is even successful)?  He will make rookie mistakes, he will learn on the job, and then once he starts to figure things out he is gone?  Wow.

When top-flight assistants were showing interest in the job I thought that might be a better way to go, even if it's just a stepping-stone position, give 'em a couple years while Will Bolt gets more experience and then let him take over.  But this might work out a little better, if indeed we get Bolt on staff as an associate head coach or something similar.  It might be that Erstad just wants to help the program out until Bolt is ready, then steps down to be a family man.  If he gets a solid pitching coach and lets him do his thing without interference, that'll go a LONG way.

Hope that's true, because we just hired the hitting coach for the last place team in the Big 12.  Yuck.  Angry

What the hitting coach giveth, the third base coach taketh away.  Your perspective lacks depth and knowledge.

Why would someone with no coaching experience be a placeholder for a current assistant coach. Why wouldn't it be the other way around?
