The startling news of Mark Colligan’s death Wednesday hit hard for Nebraska’s track and field athletes in Des Moines.

It caused as big of a jolt for Colligan’s colleagues and friends in Nebraska and across the country.

“I can’t even fathom it right now,” said Leann Boerema, the throws coach at Lincoln North Star who competed for Colligan in the early 2000s. “It seems to not be real. He’s a guy that is very talented in what he does. He’s a great leader, motivator, coach, but more important, a great person. It’s going to be difficult for a very long time.”

Colligan, 47, a former Nebraska track and field standout and a throws coach with the Huskers for more than 20 years, died Wednesday while in Des Moines for the NCAA Championships. He was found unresponsive in his hotel room early Wednesday afternoon.

According to research cited in "The Sociopath Next Door," one in every 25 people is a sociopath.  This means they have no conscience and no ability whatsoever to feel shame, guilt or remorse.  They can literally do anything at all without feeling guilty.  You undoubtedly know at least one.

Yes he was all those things.  My wife and Mark's wife Jean are good friends.  We saw her at the viewing on Sunday.  She was holding up very well.  She's a strong woman that truly loved her husband and loves her kids.  RIP Mark.  Husker Nation lost a great person last Wednesday.

“We've focused on 40-yard dash all these years. Actually, 10-yard dash is much more important in identifying talent. Coaches are just hung up on what they've always done. If you don't beat an athlete in the first few steps, it doesn't matter what your 40 time is."
