Lauren Cook arrested after Sunday morning accident
Nebraska volleyball player Lauren Cook was arrested Sunday, accused of driving under suspension and leaving the scene of an accident where two motorcyclists were injured.
Lincoln Police Capt. David Beggs said the junior setter struck a motorcycle that had pulled over to the side of Humphrey Avenue near North 14th Street just before noon Sunday.
One person on the motorcycle suffered a broken leg, Beggs said. The other person was treated at the scene for abrasions.
Officers pulled over Cook, 20, at the intersection of 14th Street and Alvo Road and arrested her. She was lodged in jail on suspicion of leaving the scene of an injury accident and driving under suspension. Cook had been released from jail by Sunday evening.
Reached on his cell phone Sunday evening, Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook said he was aware of the situation. John Cook is Lauren Cook's father.
When asked whether the arrest affected Lauren Cook's status on Nebraska's top-ranked volleyball team, the coach declined to comment.
"I'll comment at the appropriate time if there is an appropriate time," John Cook said.
A court search shows the Pius X High School graduate has a series of speeding tickets on her driving record. Lauren Cook has been convicted of four speeding infractions in Lancaster County, including one for going 11-15 mph over the speed limit in a school zone in 2009.
The Huskers lost at No. 8 Penn State in four sets Saturday night.

I heard about this this morning. And I thought Taylor was the rebel of the 2.
She has him beat hands down.

Yeah, I wonder what Taylor's reaction is.
But in all seriousness, I feel bad for John Cook.

I do as well. It has to be embarrassing. Heck she's the starting setter. This sucks for the team. She's let down a lot of people. She'll no doubt be suspended.

I don't think a suspension is necessary. I'll handle the spanking personally.

That works for me. Maybe it could turn into a part time job....something like Asst. AD for Volleyball-Related Discipline.

Let's just say that by all accounts, she has never been in any danger of making an Academic All-American list.

If that's the case, I may not need an office or even an actual title...maybe just a t-shirt and/or a fake badge would do the trick. Thanks Solly.

I'm just curious as to why she still had access to her parent's car if her license was suspended.

Can I be your deputy?
I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to do that all by yourself.

My wife works closely with a LPD officer who pretty much always has knowledge of information regarding police matters before they become public. He says that the county prosecutor and a judge were called in on Sunday in order to secure Lauren's release. Now, maybe cite and release is the standard protocol, I don't know but I doubt it since she was arrested on a felony charge, but it sounds like she may have been the benefactor of some preferential treatment. He also said that there were "University officials" at the hospital where the injured party (or parties) were being treated and they were trying to "smooth things over". He said something about skyboxes but it wasn't clear to me if he was saying that skybox tickets were offered or if that was a hypothetical.
John Cook says he wishes Lauren was a regular sorority girl. I get that he feels for her because this incident will get so much public attention but I don't think a sorority girl would get the preferential treatment that Cook may have gotten. So, her status as an elite athlete for a national collegiate volleyball powerhouse is a double-edged sword.
He also said she tried to do the right thing since there was no drugs, alcohol or texting invovled. Really? What part of driving away from an accident is the right thing? Granted, she only drove another 1/2 mile or so before stopping and calling the police. I'm hoping that she at least went back to the accident but it doesn't sound like she did since her tire was shredded when police arrived.
