Sad news here.
Sidney High School assistant football coach and former Husker letterman Robert Lance Lewis has been arrested and charged with three drug felonies.
According to an arrest affidavit, the 41-year-old Lewis was taken into custody after Nebraska State Patrol troopers discovered a pound of marijuana and four grams of hashish in his vehicle Thursday during a traffic stop on Old Post Road.
Troopers were tipped that Lewis was headed back to Sidney from Kansas and possibly transporting marijuana, prompting them to be on the lookout for his vehicle. After spotting it on I-80 and following the car into town, Lewis was pulled over for failing to signal a turn and troopers searched the vehicle after allegedly smelling an odor of marijuana coming from Lewis’ car.
Lewis appeared in Cheyenne County Court Friday on felony charges of Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Deliver or Distribute Near a Playground, Possession of a Controlled Substance Without Tax Stamps, and Possession of Hashish. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 30 according to County Attorney Paul Schaub.
Lewis remained in the local jail on $75,000 bond, ten-percent as of Friday morning.
Lewis lettered for the Husker football team in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
His wife is a dedicated Sidney School Board member and attempts to reach Superintendent John Hakonson Friday were unsuccessful.
