I know the officiating was a cause for concern but I have a question about a penalty assessment that happened during the game. NU was punting (Not the one where the ref said, "there is no penalty for a block in the back) there were 3 flags. The ref said "block in the back against the receiving team is declined", and then again said, "the second penalty for a block in the back is declined. Holding against the receiving team is accepted. NU then repunted. If NU accepted the penalty shouldn't it be enforced from the spot of the foul? Unless it was before the punt, isn't defensive holding an automatic 1st down? Any clarification would be nice. Maybe I missed something since I was drinking pretty good at that point.

I think that was because they said the holding occurred after the ball was kicked but pre-possession by the receiving team.

Also along the lines of rules, did anyone see the Michigan Va Tech game last night?  Why wasn't the UM kicker called for a false start on the OT winning kick?  He stutter-stepped prior to the snap, caught himself, immediately followed by the snap, then the kick...  Can a kicker have a false start?

That should have been a false start but was not called.

In college football, when defensive holding occurs on a pass play from scrimmage, the penalty results in an automatic first down. When defensive holding occurs on a running play or punt, the penalty does not carry an automatic first down. The officials got it right although his explanation was lacking.  Someone on NU sidelines most likely Bo motioned to re kick

I believe it was like 4th and 12.  Had it been 4th and 9  yes it would have been first down.

The down and distance showed 3rd and 12, but they hadn't put the loss of yards from the 3rd down play on there.  It was more like 4th and 25 or so.

well needless to say the 10 yards would not have made it a first down
