Criticism and/or negativity aren't necessarily bad things because if we don't step back from time to time and ask what can we do better, then we fall into complacency.

However, within the discussion of criticism there needs to be included the surrounding facts.  And that's where I think much of the discontent this season has emanated from: one camp acknowledges that although Nebraska didn't get that 3rd down conversion there were legitimate reasons why and the other camp simply viewed it as making excuses.

Anyone want to take a stab at this and explain it?

In other words, the jist of the negative posters seemed to be: "We're Nebraska and we should be able to just over-power other teams regardless of who we play and anything less than complete dominance is making excuses for failure."

Most of the "negative" posts I've read have a common theme.  And that is... Nebraska has to play a more disciplined, more focused, smarter game.  That kind of play has been called into question multiple times this season (example: bowl game and having 3 or 4 penalties on the same drive).  Some fans spend more time trying to explain away that kind of stupid play (and blame anyone who points it out as a negative fan)... and less time explaining how can that kind of play be explained 14 games into the season.  When that happens, a natural reaction is to call out the other fan.

There are fans who are completely fine with Nebraska graduating all the players, all the players having a great GPA, and losing 4 games a year on average.  And there are fans who say 4 losses in a season is a disappointment.  Given how many games we play a year now... and the competition we play... my read is 10 wins per year should be the standard.

Great post. Agree completely.

Some may disagree with the theme that disciplined winning teams are easier to recruit to, but they are understood enough to disagree with. That is not to say anything beyond the one post you made.

CDog you're not the most pessimistic guy on the board ... but, you're right up there with him. Cheesy

I believe in behavial change ... but, this will be a huge stretch.  It will be fun keeping you in line.  It will be like the old days at my grammar school when I was a homeroom monitor. Tongue

Ha ha ha. I promise I haven't always been that way....I lost my sunshine pumper card sometime during college...

It's funny you mention the "sunshine pumper card".  I had one up till 2002.  Well, amend that.  Up to the CU and Miami games in 2001.  After those games, the Nebraska mystique was gone.  And I burned my card.  We haven't got the mojo back, IMO.  I'm a more in the middle fan now.  I can see positives... more of that with Pelini than with Callahan and Solich.  But I also see negatives/questions about the program.  And the coin of the realm for me now is... how does the team perform on the field.  I don't put much stuck in "give it another year" or "we have talent in the pipeline".  I've heard that a lot over the past 10 years.

Stepping off the soapbox.

I was in college for the Callahan years, if that makes any difference...
