We are ranked 17th...I think this is a respectable preseason ranking considering who we are losing and how we finished the year. Suprised that Texas leap frogged us after their dismal year they had, Okie St falling deep but understand that a little bit with Weedon/Blackmon gone and USC leap frogging everyone to 2nd place but I do agree they are going to be an extreme threat next year for BCS title...Goooooo Biiiiiiiig Reeeeeed!!!!

17 is a little high I am thinking more like 25th they have done nothing to prove this last season to be ranked that high IMO

Somewhere between 20 and 25.  We haven't done anything to warrant a higher ranking than that.

Ah... the rankings are based on last year's performance and what the pollsters think about a team's chances for the upcoming season (returning players, the prior season's success/not success, coaching changes, etc).

That's what 'warrant' means, in this context.

Husker314 makes a great point.  It's all pretty worthless chatter.  But what else do we have to do in the off season.  I prefer to send all of my positive Husker energy toward the recruiting gods until the second week of February.  Then, I turn my attention to the gods of Spring practice and begging that no key players encounter season-ending injuries and that all the underclassmen develop into pseudo-professionals overnight.  In the summer, I'll return to sending positive vibes to the recruiting gods, only this time the focus will be on the 2013 class, wishing and praying that we can be like the Whorns and have our entire class locked up before the end of the smallmouth bass spawn.  Finally, as fall approaches, I'll begin complaining about the AP rankings and how these writers just don't understand the full impact of some walkon lineman from Broken Bow and how he's going to put us "over the top" this season.  Of course, you all are welcome to start that discussion now.  I just have to question your priorities in where you're focusing your Husker energy.   I've got to get back to making sure we finish this current recruiting class on a strong note!  Wink

Lost Lettermen

Quote
24. Nebraska - Following the second straight late-season implosion, it’s anyone’s guess how the Huskers will fare in 2012. Taylor Martinez’s passing will be a huge factor in this team’s success. If he doesn’t improve, expect Nebraska to underachieve again

Mercury News

Quote
18. Nebraska: Quarterback Taylor Martinez makes the Huskers a threat in the rugged Legends Division, which includes the Michigan schools.

ESPN

Quote
13. Nebraska Cornhuskers: Nebraska fans are starting to get a little impatient with coach Bo Pelini, whose teams lost four games in each of his first four seasons. The Cornhuskers went 9-4 in their first season in the Big Ten in 2011, losing to South Carolina 30-13 in the Capital One Bowl. Nebraska probably won't get better quickly unless quarterback Taylor Martinez becomes a more efficient passer. Nebraska brings back top tailback Rex Burkhead, but it will have to replace three starting offensive linemen. Eight defensive starters are coming back, but the Cornhuskers will miss star linebacker Lavonte David. Nebraska will play road games at UCLA, Ohio State, Michigan State and Iowa, and it plays Wisconsin and Michigan at home.

CBS Sports

Quote
14. Nebraska: The Cornhuskers have plenty of regulars back -- eight offensive starters and nine defensive starters -- from last season's 9-4 Capital One Bowl team. It was Coach Bo Pelini's fourth consecutive season with four losses. Is this finally the year Pelini loses less than four? The Cornhuskers return all of their key skill position players -- QB Taylor Martinez, RB Rex Burkhead and WRs Quincy Enunwa and Kenny Bell. However, NU must replace three of five starters on the offense line. The Blackshirts return nearly intact, but must improve from last year when they allowed at least 28 points in six games (had only allowed three in previous two years combined). The biggest losses are LB Lavonte Davis, CB Alfonzo Dennard and DT Jared Crick, who missed the second half of the season because of a torn pectoral muscle. The Cornhuskers should have no trouble getting through the nonconference schedule unscathed (Southern Miss., UCLA, Arkansas State and a team to be added). The Big Ten slate features home games vs. Wisconsin and Michigan and road games at Ohio State and Michigan State.

Well since we're already looking ahead to next season...here's the Huskers schedule:

Sat, Sep 01   Southern Miss  Memorial Stadium

  Sat, Sep 08   @ UCLA

  Sat, Sep 15   Arkansas State

  Sat, Sep 22   TBA

  Sat, Sep 29   Wisconsin

Sat, Oct 06   @ Ohio State

  Sat, Oct 20   @ Northwestern

  Sat, Oct 27   Michigan

Sat, Nov 03   @ Michigan State

  Sat, Nov 10   Penn State

  Sat, Nov 17   Minnesota

  Fri, Nov 23   @ Iowa

That means we'll probably have two losses on the road and one loss to an unranked team at home.  The losses on the road at Ohio State, Northwestern and a home loss to an unranked Penn State is the most likely scenario--followed by another loss in the bowl game.

The comes a likely loss in the bowl game.

Note: I'm not saying it will happen, nor am I being negative...I'm simply saying that it'll happen if Nebraska follows "precedent."

I am not sure what Husker nation will be like next year Bo seems to get tighter lipped every year and we get no new Husker information.  I think we are currently a top 30 team but from 25 to 45 it is a one TD difference.

What do you mean "haven't done anything?" If you take last year's power rating, divide by the average of your three toughest opponents and multiply by the rushing yardage of your non-conference opponents then multiply by the square root of the hypotenuse it comes out to 17. It's pretty cut and dried.

Throw in extra helpings of "we have guys in the pipeline" and "our next QB is going to be great" and you have 17.1.  In red.
