Juco coach says Seisay is better than two other CB's he coached and ended up at Nebraska, Bowman and Murillo. Good read about Seisay and recruiting! One mistake in there though. Asante didn't go to Eastern Arizona. I believe he was a Coffeyville product.

Read that article and I am hopeful that his coach is right. I think we need for him and Zaire Anderson at lb to come in and make a difference this season. I think we have good depth and solid players on D for next season but are in serious need of playmakers. I can see Green as a growing into a very good #2 corner but just don't see him as a great #1 lockdown corner. I can also say that I see Compton growing into a very good LB making the calls and being dependable but don't see him making plays all over the field.

Speaking of Anderson, I thought that he was going to be here for Spring Practice, or do I have that wrong?

Anderson graduates in February or some really weird date, but won't be able to sign up for the spring sememster and miss spring ball. He may move down here before that. He said something in an article about he maybe able to lift and workout here, but not do springball, but that doesn't sound correct to me.

Here's what I do not understand...Our coaches can find excellent juco CB and LBs but they can't seem to recruit excellent CB and LBs out of high school. What gives?

Jen, You've got some homework to do.
And doesn't this statement run counter to your "we have as much talent as Alabama" argument?

Seemingly. Until one realizes that talent is talent regardless if it comes from the high school or juco ranks...
(I'd just like to see more high school talent and less jucos.)

Honestly, Ted, I don't think Jen is necessarily wrong to date. We've had one outstanding HS CB (Dennard).....and.....Compton at LB? Whaley? Fisher? Not one top of the line HS linebacker so far.
If you are talking about the next batch (Santos, Rose, etc at LB and some of the kids who may be signing on at CB) then I see your point.

I would too, but some reasons why there may be legitmate reasons to go after juco's are.......
I think one factor may be the junior exodus that is of relatively recent origins. Programs are more likely to get high quality talent for two or three productive years regardless of where they come from.........not many four year starters at programs anymore.
Another is the limited practice times compared to a few decades ago. Large programs with large amounts of kids just don't have the time to spend developing and molding athletes the way they used to.
And finally, two more years of physical maturity gives a more complete picture of how the athletes will develop physically.

Agree. I'd like to see more HS talent on board in these positions.

Nice effort Fred ... but unfortunately falls short on the JC vs. HS scale. Huskers have had zero junior exodus problems. Huskers have the same practice times as everyone else including Wiscy, UM and OSU. Two more years of physical maturity is good ... but let's get that done on campus where they could RS one of those years and learn the O or D systems the next. Jen is right. Let's get the HS guys first and only go JC when holes develop. Ted is right. Huskers are doing better in the HS ranks. But here's the rub. Better in the HS ranks does not mean better on the field. We have tons of HS talent that can't get on the field. Ask yourself why? My answer: either the players being recruited are not good fits for our systems or our systems are not good fits for the players being recruited.

Jucos are great if their number is small (1 to 2 per class) and it is used as a short term fix to get talent from high school ready. But at the LB and CB positions we currently seem to rely too heavily on jucos.
And Bus is correct...the jury is still out on the LBs who redshirted this season. Not to mention the LBs in the '12 class.

I'm referring to the current class. Stud LBs and it looks like we'll get another solid CB (or two) to join Charles Jackson. As a reminder, we had both Jackson and Tevin Mitchell last recruiting class until Arkansas came in late and nabbed Mitchell. And we got Santos at LB last year. We'll know more on this topic in about 2 weeks...

My answer: either the players being recruited are not good fits for our systems or our systems are not good fits for the players being recruited.
Good points and ones that I agree with for the most part. In fact as stated, I prefer HS recruits. They need to be the backbone and core of any good program. I will however defend why I think jucos are
more
attractive in today's environment as opposed to the past.
It is true that NU has not had a run of junior defections to the NFL. You may be right that there are none....I know I can't think of any off hand. Most defections from NU come from players who have decided to leave the program after taking the investment of time and energies of the coaches and program and go elsewhere. It is expected but is a cost (time and energy wise) to the program. Can one evaluate a juco who has played at the college level for one or more years better than a high school player? I might argue that one can sometimes. Also, just because we haven't lost defections doesn't mean that we won't. The truth is, since early leave became popular, we haven't had many first round draft players as juniors.....at least not definite ones.
Second, we do have the same practice times as everyone else........but not the same as we used to. Therefore we have less time to work on "projects". Something NU has to do because of where we are located. Not as many players to choose from AND not as many who have had the luxury of sophisticated programs and schemes. ie 6man players might be as good athletically but the don't have the same preparation that kids from larger urban areas and/or Texas, Ohio, etc have. It takes time to catch them up.
Finally, no one,and I mean this, can prepare our athletes better physically than our training staff and programs. We are the best....period. There are other good ones but we do not take a back seat to anyone. You cannot make gold from lead however, and I might suggest that it is easier to get a better physical read from a more physically mature individual......less physical busts. Also many juco's are where they because of academics. They were the best athletes coming out of high school but for whatever reasons they didn't make the grade scholastically. Once they have proved that they can I think some are worth another look.
Please don't take this as if I am saying we need to load up on juco's. I do not believe this. But I also don't lose any sleep over adding some to our fold. I think they bring something to the mix.....now more than ever.
