I had lunch today with an old friend from the Saddlehorse Industry.

Our conversation migrated to about what a great person this one individual was and I had a thought flash through my mind, what would Bo have done with all the criticism on his rants and raving.

I got to know Bert and can tell you that Bert had more fire in her belly than Bo ever will,  yet was composure to the Captial C.  The situation is this:

You are  coaching a US amateur team in South America and they fans started throwing pesos the size of quarters at the players. The coach has been hit a couple of times and even has a welt or two and that one of the refs even picked up a peso and threw it at a US player on the bench who was criticizing him.

And actually happened!

Now you are in enemy territory and you are Bo what would you have done?

I'll say BO collects as many of the pesos that he can to give them to the needy folks down there.  He's got lots of class.   Smiley

Bo would've walked off the field as soon as he realized he was coaching soccer.

Going on a fishing expedition Joe???

....anyways, I'll give it a stab...

Bo would have roundhouse kicked the ref, along with each and every peso flying through the air at his players until the fans all applauded his teams glorious victory....

Bo would have never been hit by pesos.  They would have been scared to death on approach and boomeranged back to the thrower.

Bo would have hit the pesos so hard that when they landed back in the thrower's hand, the pesos would have Bo's likeness engraved on them with the words "In Bo We Trust" on the other side.

Bo would have waved dismissively to the crowd and fired off a few epithets.

Other previous coaches?

BC would have made a throat slash gesture and whistled and dug his head back into his playcard.

FS would have steeled his jaw and concentrated harder on the game that was falling out of his grasp.

TO would have taken a pensive look and held his chin with his thumb and forefinger and willed the team to victory.

Yes, and then he would have bought them a drink when he saw them in the pub later that night.   Smiley

According to research cited in "The Sociopath Next Door," one in every 25 people is a sociopath.  This means they have no conscience and no ability whatsoever to feel shame, guilt or remorse.  They can literally do anything at all without feeling guilty.  You undoubtedly know at least one.

That's probably really close.  Just change the direction and the orifice.

The lady I referred to is none other than Alberta Lee Cox, who many consider the pioneer for Womens Basketball as we know it today.
The team sportsmanship award at the NJCAA tourney is named after her.
Bert told me that they were playing in Chile I think it was and that the crowd was horrible and the referees were even worse.
It seems that they had gone into the slums, barrio’s or shanty towns and recruited kids to be vocal opponents of the USA Team for the game.
They were warming up for the 2nd half and that was when a coin or two started flying.  Midway through the 3rd quarter was when it got really bad
Bert called time out, picked up several of the coins and went to the referee and politely place then in his pocket then told him to remember the jingle as would need them as the last game he would ever call as she gave him a hug.
While this was going on more coins were being tossed and she had her team go and pick the coins up off the floor and instructed her team to go give the coins to the kids in the stands.
Needless to say the last half of the 2nd half the kids were all yelling for the USA and even urging the Chileans to throw more coins.
The bad calls stopped as it seemed that some of the kids started throwing coins at the refs ever time they would call a foul on the USA.
Alberta said even when a bad call she would run up to the refs and clap to show the the kids that it was a good call to protect them.
My ex wife and I were waiting to eat at restaurant in Louisville during the Kentucky State Fair and Bert invited us to sit down with her and “Kay.” Kay was none other than Kay Yow who was in Louisville recruiting and ran into Alberta.
They were laughing about things when Alberta told us what went on in Chile.
I told Alberta that refs are kind of like horses, they get mad, you get mad, they get madder, you getter hotter then things blow up and what happens?
Alberta grabbed me hugged me and said a “whole lot of sugar goes a long way.”
Alberta had the temperament of TO on the court but yet there was a fire raging within her but she never showed it or expressed it.
Alberta was the first woman ever named to coach a US Olympic Team in any sport and also I think the first woman to coach a US team on foreign soil.
I would also have to do some research but think that her horse was on the cover of Sporting Ilustrated and the only non racing horse every to be on the cover.

It's safe to say that about 99% of coaches out there wouldn't have handled that situation as well as Bert.  That goes for football coaches, basketball coaches, baseball coaches, etc.  How do you think Augie Garrido would have handled that?  Urban Meyer?  Phil Jackson?  Pat Summit?  The reactions would have been as varied as the coaches named.  The fact that Bo would have reacted differently than Bert is irrelevant.  Bert's response, while excellent, isn't the only "correct" response.

Asking how Bo would have handled it is a bit of a loaded question.  The presumption is that Angry Bo would have exploded derp all over the ref and crowd, but as we saw this year, Bo can (and has) calmed down incredibly from seasons past. There were a number of situations this year where we were dealt bogus calls, only to see Bo pacing the sidelines in disgust, but not anger.

I guess you missed the OSU game and the USC game.  Just a little more aggitated than walking along the sideline.

Nope, didn't miss them at all.  But those were the exception this year, not the norm.  2009 and 2010 were banner years for Bo Explosions.  2011 was calm in comparison.  Nothing I said is to say that Bo does not blow up.  He just does it far less than he did in the past.
