Please post your memories of how good we once were.  I remember the '72 Orange Bowl drubbing of Alabama, and the '83 scoring explosion triplets (still have the poster of that team).  For some reason this video tribute of Bobby Newcombe stands out.  May be it's the music... the highlights certainly grab your attention.  Bobby Newcombe was a special kind of football player.  Some of it is for me... the realization that Newcombe played on the last Nebraska teams that were awesome in their power and poise.  That we were once first among peers and on any given Saturday afternoon... no one could beat us.

Bobby Newcombe was a special athlete.  Saw him play both football and basketball at Highland HS in Albuquerque.  Ironically, his high school teammate, Jarrod Baxter, ended up having a more productive career in the NFL than Bobby did.  He was a very good blocking back for the Texans for about 3 or 4 years.

Where did Baxter play college ball at?

I'll never forget the '83 team.  That was the best a 13 year old teenager had ever seen at that time.  It stung that we didn't win the National Title that year, but you move on.  Then the next great moment was 6 months after moving to Phoenix in '95 my wife and I attended the National Championship that year when NU clobbered Florida.  That capped a great season and we were the first back to back National Champs since '78,'79 Alabama teams.

Baxter stayed home and played for Rocky Long and the NM Lobos.

I remember laughing with relief and almost crying with joy after we won the title in 94. That was so long in coming. I remember laughing with glee as the 95 team pummeled the opposition. It was ridiculous how good that team was. I loved watching the defense absolutely stone people. It was so much fun to watch the offensive line blast people off the line of scrimmage and then watch Frazier and Phillips rumble down the sideline. I think that was the season Phillips had an arm in a cast. I remember him using it as a virtual weapon and basically punching opposing players with it.

The only other time I enjoyed football so much was when my Bucs won the Super Bowl.

After watching that video, I can't help but think that Jamal Turner could be that kind of player.  He just needs to fix whatever was wrong with his head from last season, but I think he has the tools.
