That's a very impressive batch of walk-ons. There are some real players there, and I'd bet several become starters eventually, and several more will contribute.

I wouldn't take that bet......'cause I'd be pretty sure of losing. From what I'm hearing from some who know more than I.......we snagged some play makers here.

When you look at some of these walkons you have to admire the love they have for the Huskers, as many would get full rides at a lot of schools.  Then you have to laugh at the recruiting services who you know have never seen these kids live and in color.  Reminds me of the old days when they would rank the Husker recruits in the thirty range and then they would end up being very relevent come time to vote in the polls.  That's when the word reload arrived in the announcers book of phrases.  That Utter kid looks every bit as good as the scholarship recipients.  The quarterback has great footwork and pocket presence.  He'll teach the present group a thing or two.  We seem to have a load of fullbacks in this group.

Bo is smiling and learning to hang on to a few of those scholarships.  Bo has learned some old Indian tricks from the Doctor.  Nebraska would rather have a class not recognized by the supposed gurus as to not have the walkon program steaming along as it appears.  When you don't use all your scholarships you will never be rated very high.  Yet when it happened in the old days the fans never worried too much.  They knew. They knew several would receive those save scholarships and would collect some hardware along the way.  It's how the old system worked.  Reloading seems to be back in style again.  For those that are stuck in the star system just take a look at the hyperlink supplied above.  Maybe they can sleep a little better now.

Indeed.  The best of the bunch, I think anyway, is King Frazier from Missouri.  I actually liked his film better than Imani Cross'.

Great video!  Is there a similar one for the scholarship athletes?

Good post.

What are the general odds of recruits panning out nationwide?  Somewhere around 50%?  And what is it for our walkons?  I would guess somewhere around 15-20%.

Do the math.  Our walkons are worth several extra scholies.  If 5 of these 26 walkons pan out and contribute, that's roughly equivalent to 10 scholies.

I don't know what the actual percentages are, and you can play around with them all you want, but our walkon program is clearly worth a significant amount of scholarships.

That video is really neat, I think that's pretty cool that they do that for the walkons.  It's a very stout walkon class.

A very smart move on his part.  Im glad too, cause I wanted him to save some up for a rainy day or deserving athlete.   Wink Cheesy

I don't think there is any doubt that the star system has some validity.  It's much like a horse form.  It has tangible measurements of past success, size, strength weight and speed.  There is much to take away from the star system.  It also only goes so far and has limitations. It doesn't for see the future of youngsters.  It has many that slip through their system for many reasons.  They can't see everyone.  They don't take in the obvious dimensions of how youngsters mature physically and mentally.  It doesn't take into consideration parents and their plight in life.  It doesn't know completely and rate work ethics and durability to endure pressures of college life.

Coach Osborne has his own criteria.  He has mastered the walkon concept.  He recruits the parents to find out the mental stability of the kids.  Character, character, character.  He looks for smart athletes first.  All intangibles that don't fit the star equation of pure athletics and past performances.  I think you must take away what you can from the star system and add your own equation into the final decision.  Nebraska didn't invent the walkon athlete but they definitely have refined it for their own situation.  Boise State and Wisconsin are imitators of the system and are finding success.  Use the star system as a working tool, then add in your own system and have that final outcome.  Nebraska is unique as a program.  They use five years to get some athletes built for their purpose.  They import speed.  They use the walkon system as a weapon of numbers.  They overachieve and have a reputation of taking those who fall through the cracks.  It doesn't work for everybody, but it does work for them.  A track record of success with most of the bugs worked out over decades of refinement.

I just watched the recruiting videos for the walk ons and am very impressed!  I know they are highlight videos, but I think some of them look like legit D1 prospects.  I will not be surprised at all when some of them are contributing greatly to this team in the future.

What's not to like about some of these kids?  And a great group of Class A kids, including three from Burke.  These kids no doubt had scholorships from smaller schools, but chose to live out their dream at Nebraska.  Impressive!

I was particularly impressed with the speed and agility of Carson Collins, the fullback from Burke.  For a 220 guy, he appears to have good speed and some of the moves for a guy that size are impressive.  The McCann kid from Burke (LB) appears to be a big-time hitter and the other kid from Burke, Jordan Nelson, definitely has some wheels on him.  From what you see of Trey Foster, the TE/DE from Lincoln Southeast, he really appears to have some tremendous strength.  The Foltz kid from Grand Island certainly looks good in some of the video, too...especially as a DB.  The quarterback from GI, Fyfe, looks pretty solid, too.  He looked very good on the one option they showed and what an arm!  Did you notice his pass where he was scrambling and actually had his feet off the ground but still threw a 40-yard strike to Folz along the sideline?  Pretty impressive!  The Simpson kid from Ralston is a little small for a linebacker but what a "head hunter."

Obviously, all we are seeing is "highlights" but this looks like a pretty solid bunch of walk-ons.  I love it when we can grab some of these "under the radar" in-state guys.  As has been mentioned in a previous post, some of these guys will eventually become starters at Nebraska and some of them will at the very least, be contributors.

Very cool.  Out of this group give me a contributing TE, a FB, a LB, a P and a WR and I'm a happy man.  Oh, and of course a FS. Grin
