We win it 74-60.
We need to start playing complete 60 minutes of basketball if we want to compete in the Big 12. These close victories against a team like this won't cut it.

At least they won.

Looked very sloppy tonight. Like they haven't ever played with each other. Holley had a sick dunk though

I'd settle for 40.

I'd be the first to admit that I didn't think we should have offered Holley. Coleman looked like a way bigger get at the time. But Holley's a player. He's really not that great at any aspect of the game, but man does he have a motor and man can he get off the floor. Maybe a dark horse in this program. I can tell you that since his first couple practices to now, he's improved by leaps and bounds.
It's bothersome that we are playing so sloppy this close to Big 12 play. I mean it was bad guys. Maryland ES was quick, that's about all. They rebounded better and they flat outplayed us in the first half. This year, we have started nearly every game so flat, lacking effort. Then at half, they seem to respond with maximum effort. Doc's gotta work with this team to fix it or we are going to be going into halves of Big 12 games having already lost.
A win is a win, I'll take it. This team needs to keep working every day though or we are going to be in some trouble.

i was glad to get out to the game today, since i've been working and mostly radio-bound this year.
on holley: i like this kid, and have since i saw him. he's athletic as all get out. i liken him to ade. ade might have been a better offensive player at this point. it seemed to me like ade came in as a guard and had to play a lot in the post, whereas holley looks like a guy who has played a good deal inside and is moving out. i don't know if that's true, but that's kind of what he looks like. anyway, if holley can keep gaining knowledge of the system, and develop an offensive style for a 3/4 spot, he could really be something. he's looked like a hardworker every time i've seen him and he's a heck of an athlete.
as for the game, i didn't think it was
that
bad, but it wasn't good. UMES did outwork us a good deal in the first half. they outrebounded us by about a zillion, even after 40 minutes. they weren't big at all - small enough to look like us last year. but they flew around. athletes all around (except berry, who was a beast of a dude. bet you he could find you some good BBQ in baltimore). they crashed the boards hard and were pretty relentless. they were unselfish on the offensive end. they looked like some good ball players. don't know what the deal was with their roster. they only traveled 9 and played 8 until the last guy got in with about :50 left. strange.
offensively, it looks like doc has added some new wrinkles this year. running a lot more out of 1-4 sets, which doc has been adding more of the last few years. seemed to run our base out of a 1-4 set today. looking for a 2 man game from the wing, followed by a double screen for a cutter at the FT line. we clanked every open catch at the FT line today. really need someone to hit that shot - someone can make a great living hitting that 15 footer all day. maybe standhardinger is it. further, i could see the cutter coming off the double screen and driving to the hoop for some layins, especially if you suck that post guy from the 2 man game out to the short corner. or step the post guy out to the short corner and get him the ball, and allow him to dish to the cutter since the double screen should ease up help defense a good deal. i could see sek excelling as a cutter with a big emphasis on getting to the rack. i'm sure doc will run more looks out of the 1-4 in big 12 play. we really only released 1 side all night and didn't even make a threat to go to the other side most of the time.
i thought sek played an atrocious game. so many terrible decisions. quick shots, not being ready for an obvious give and go on a fast break, poor shot choice once he got to the rack. can't win with one of your seniors playing that way. the whole 2nd part of the 1st half was terrible offensively. rushed shots, bad shots, taking shots early in the shot clock that you can get any time you want. those are the decisions by players on the floor that override any offensive philosophy and make for scoring droughts. frustrating from that standpoint.

Oh jeez, 40 minutes not 60.
Goes to show you I'm still in football mode.

NIce, Hanny. I think Holley is a lot like Ade. As far as Sek goes, I would have though he'd have learned after netting some bench time after last game. Guess not. You called Sek. He's a good, solid basketball player but nothing more. Richardson is playing at a high level, I've been very pleased with him. Nice to have Ryan back. Makes plays, but still makes the same mistakes he did as a frosh.
Doc's doing a lot of different things on offense this year. I, for one, like it. Comes down to execution though. I'm suprised this team only has 3 wins. Without looking at their schedule, I would have thought they would have had more.
