The preview:

Let's try to gain some momentum these last few games before Big 12 play. Certainly need it after that last game.

Shouldn't be much of a game. Southern has gotten beat badly numerous times this year.
Actually, the next 3 games should be easy wins!

If we have another UMBC this year I'll probably have a stroke...
We really should win all three. We need some momentum going into the big 12 because it's going to be tough.

Again, a poor start. Things picked up though and we were able to score some points tonight. Of course, I'd expect it against this team. Hankins-Cole and Holley need more minutes. Holley played out of his mind tonight. If we get that type of effort from him for the rest of his career here I'd be more than happy. He's an incredible athlete. QHC, Holley, and Gallegos have improved a lot over the last few months. Let's just hope they continue to develop at the rate they are.
Defensive effort still not where it needs to be. Hopefully this game will give our offense a bit more confidence....we're gonna need all we can get.

this is a slow starting team. and that is going to seriously kill us in conference if we don't get it fixed. look at what it did in the byu game. played about even after the nightmare was over. but byu is a pretty good team, much like a lot of teams we'll see in the big 12. you can get away with starting out 12-3 or 9-2 against southern utah or whoever else kicks our butt for the first 6 minutes in november and december. but in january and february, you may as well turn it off if we start off like that against mizzou or ku or texas. i'm hoping that maybe the intensity will be easier to bring out in conference play. but there's no guarantee. NU has had a hard time grasping offense - realizing when to create a shot, waiting for the offense to produce a look, and knowing where and when to look for the open guy in the offense. i don't think our offense is bad, its just that our guys don't have the instincts and feel yet to know that being patient doesn't just mean passing - it means passing with a purpose and being ready when opportunities come.

What is funny to me is that nobody thinks it might be the coach that is having the problem!!
They play good defense, so it isn't that they can't learn.. Maybe it is the coach?

You mean we need an offensive coordinator?
Doc can teach D. I'm not sure how good he is at teaching "O". How potent was UTEP under Doc?

sure, it crosses my mind often. its a lingering problem NU has. i consider it all the time. but when i watch them play, and see what doc is trying to do on offense, i don't think doc is our biggest worry for our offensive problems. i honestly don't know if he's a good offensive coach, great, terrible, or whatever, because i haven't seen a group of players execute his offense effectively, efficiently, and consistently. from what i see, i wouldn't say its too complex and he can't teach it. in honesty, there's not a ton of complexity to any basketball offense, especially a motion offense doc plays a lot of. that's more about instinct and timing, things like that. it can be very easy to grasp, but it can also go south real fast if you have guys with poor spacing, not hitting cutters, not moving away from the ball. you can coach and coach and coach it, but when you get out on the floor, you get guys creeping towards the ball or standing and looking, and it breaks down quickly. its frustrating to watch, and frustrating to play in.
his zone o, i think, has gotten lots better over the last couple years. he's moved to a high post/baseline system, which i love to death. but there's a great reluctance to throw it to the high post, which absolutely kills a zone. what can you do about that? if they won't throw it there, you're screwed. he's made changes there, but the players aren't consistently using the advantages the offense is designed for.
you're right, though. it certainly could be that doc is a poor offensive coach. but i'll say the jury's still out because i haven't seen players consistently play like they know what they're doing on that end of the floor. that's also a mark against doc, because its his job to find players to do that. i think guys like richardson and bear are inching closer to that, but injuries have limited their minutes. so yeah, i worry about it being doc, in different regards.

Good post. Either way, IMO, Doc is at the forefront of the issue. It is either his coaching or the players, of which he recruited. Important factor not to be overlooked. These are Doc's players!
