Here it is. I believe we have him locked up for the next 5 years.

I really don't see the benifit to extending coaches so far in advance. I understand that by extending them you can show potential recruits that he's going to be here. However, are you saying that if we go 15-17 next year and 5-11 in conference that he won't be fired? He will. Instead, if we go 23-10 and 11-5 in conference will that extention prevent Texas (hypothetical) from hiring him away if they deside they want him? It won't. To me, the only thing extending does is ensure we have a hire payout if he were to be terminated.

The one reason he was locked up for 2 seasons is for recruiting. His contract was for 3 years, and recruits could've been shied away from the potential for the coach who recruited them to not be there for 4 years.

I'd buy that arguement if it was a true lame duck situation, but it's not. Also, the kid is going to realize that if the coach underperforms terribly (the above 15-17 senerio) the extention won't matter, he's going to get the ax.

I wasn't opposed to keeping him at least 1 more year, but I don't get this. Oh well. I will throw myself in front of a moving vehicle (maybe a bicycle) when Osborne gives Mike Anderson an extension.

Here's what I think....
T.O. does like Doc, I think we all know that. This year's recruiting class is almost already wrapped up, which I feel is one of Doc's best at Nebraska.
I truly feel that the extension was issued because in the next 1-3 years, there's going to be some epic local recruiting battles between Nebraska and schools around the country that could define the program. Of course I'm talking about Mike Gesell, Adam Woodbury, and Akoy Agau. I think Gesell and Agau are very special, the SSC-Iowa kid is solid.
At the end of the day, T.O. and Doc both wanted to put down the rumors of him leaving or being on the hot seat. Doc's been recruiting these guys for a while now, there is a relationship built there.
Just my opinion about why it was done.....right or wrong.

T.O. was saying on Sports Nightly tonight that Doc has been contacted by a couple of teams this year and an SEC team the year before. Lee B. wrote an article that pretty much says the same thing. Perhaps that played a small role in it as well.

Regardless of what is perceived by the fans, Doc's reputation in coaching circles is pretty good.
If you simply do a side-by-side comparison of who NU has on the floor versus NU's opponet, NU's starters would have a hard time even getting playing time.
If one of your go-to guys is an in-state walk-on, you have talent issues.
If Doc can recruit with the new facilities, I think NU will be in good shape. But if he can't we'll need to cut him loose and get someone in who can.
You can't simply "coach up" teams in Div 1 basketball, especially if you're playing in a power conference. You need talent.

Question: who's responsibility is it to bring talent to Nebraska?

Been the problem for a LONG time, talent.
Doc can coach no problem, but cannot recruit!

Question: who's responsibility is it to bring talent to Nebraska?
Who's been responsible for Nebraska being last in the Big 12 for facilities?
No tradition, no in-state talent, and no facility upgrades in over 30-years.
NO ONE has been able to recruit for NU since Nee and even he ended up getting fired because the talent was gone.
I'm not giving Doc a pass. If we build the practice facility and arena, and he STILL can't manage to get talent to come here, pony up the dough and get someone here who can.
The support for the basketball program doesn't end when the facilities are built. If Doc can't get it done, NU has the money to go get someone who will. No more "up-and-coming" Mid-Major coaches. Get an established assistant from a team that has been to at least the Elite 8, or steal a coach from a program who's resume not only includes getting to the NCAA, but staying there past the first weekend.
End of subject.

Excuses are like a certain part of the anatomy. The fact is, that Doc hasn't gotten the talent here to get Nebrasketball over the hump. That, and his decision making processes can certainly be questioned when you look at the amount of players (that he himself has brought in) that have left the program prematurely.

Nebraska is not completely berift of talent. It just seems that way, because anytime we do graduate basketball talent, it goes anywhere but Lincoln. This has been a problem for a VERY long time. Heck, I remember when I was in high school - Nebraska had at least two D1A basketball talents in Mike McGee and Jim Gregory. Mike went to Michigan (and then to the Lakers) and Jim went to UNO. Both turned down offers from UNL - and Jim was fairly insolent about it.
There have been a number of other players who've come from Nebraska and gone to places like Kansas and other schools, and on to the NBA. Lincoln never seems to be able to keep them. That has to change one of these days, if they are every going to pull out of the drain swirly thingy.
