Just curious if anyone out there enjoys a cigar now and then, and if so any recommendations.  Also you have a nice cigar knowledge I wouldn't mind learning more.  As for me I tend to buy sampler packs from Thompson cigar because of the selection.  My favorite cigars thus far seem to come from Rocky Patel, esp the 1990 had one on the honeymoon and still can't get it out of my head.  I've also smoked Cohiba, Macanudo, Romo Y Juleta, Partagas, and Punch.  I'm not sure particular sub brand, wrapper etc made them likable.

I tried about 2 dozen different premium brands, and the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 won out, and is my cigar of choice. I particularly like the Churchill and Robusto sizes.

You can get Vintage 1990 factory 2nds for about $60/bundle of 20 on Cigars.com. After going through about 3 boxes of 20 of the regulars, and 2 bundles of the 2nds, I haven't noticed any difference in taste or burn, and it saves you a huge chunk of change.

I've never smoked anything in my life, but I like to listen to the Cigar Dave show on Saturday's.  Dave is based on Tampa (where I live), but his weekly radio show is syndicated nationally.  If you like cee-gars, I recommend that you give the show a listen.  Dave is a political conservative who believes in freedom and especially freedom from government in order to enjoy the good life.  Notice on the webpage that I have linked below that Dave states "No Bolshevik, No Socialist Zone."

I buy from Thompson as well.  Padron mostly.  I'm a fan of cigars from Nicarugua.  Cigars from DR are good too.  If you haven't tried them... I highly recommend Cohiba Robustos from Cuba.

I can't smoke them anymore, because I like them too much.  But when I did, I used to get Cubans locally.  Cohiba gets all the hype, but it is probably the least impressive Cuban cigar.  Anyone who tells you that there are Cigars from outside Cuba that are just as good has never had a real Cuban cigar.  They are as distinctive among cigars as Kona is compared to other coffees.

I don't remember all of the brands (and never knew many of them, but the following left an impression:  Punch, Bolivar, and Montecristo.  (Again, I am specifically referring to the Cuban iterations of these brands.  Those from outside Cuba are pretty good, but really do not belong in the same conversation, at least for my own tastes.

Tried all the Cuban brands... disagree with you about Cohiba.  Agree with you completely about Cuban cigars versus everywhere else.  Cuban cigars are the best.

A fellow therapist of ours went to the DR for a service trip and brought back Caoba, supposedly a new  brand out of the DR from some of the more famous rollers of Cohiba.  I guess they are supposed to be an everyday kinda smoke, and while they are young, they are very enjoyable.  Talked to the cigar guy in KC at the Plaza and he had never heard of them, but also said he hadn't been to the DR. in a few years now.  Said he would check into them, but I highly doubt he does.

Any tips on figuring out where and how to get some good cubans, I've smoked a cuban monticristio when i was much younger, but at that time it was just a cigar, I would love to get my hands on a few let them age and then smoke them with those who enjoy.

also solly, that cigars.com site ends up as JRcigars.com, is that what you are referring to?

there's a label called Ernesto P. Carillo that is absolutely fantastic, you may be able to find it under the name "EPC" as well, it's a smaller wrapper but their products are absolutely first rate.

yeah, it really depends on the cohiba.  I try to get a couple whenever I'm abroad (for use there, not here obviously) and you get a huge difference in the cigar as you move up from a siglio serie I to V, with V being at the top end.  The V is absolutely glorious, a truly peerless cigar.

I've used them for 5 years or so. Best labels at great prices. I love the quickies and samplers.

But then again, don 't we all? Wink

I'm far from a cigar officianado but I enjoy the occassional cigar.  I have a kind of funny story about buying cigars while on vacation in Jamaica.

I walked into a cigar store in Negril and told the proprietor that I wanted to buy some Cuban cigars.  The guy immediately saw me for  what I was - an ignorant American tourist.  He immediately suggested some brand saying that they were the same cigars that President Kennedy smoked and stocked up on prior to shutting down trade with Cuba.  I didn't buy his story for a second....but I did buy the cigars.  I still have no idea if they were legitimate Cubans or not.  They were good smokes, though, at least to my simple palet.  I did manage to smuggle a few back so I could enjoy them with friends.  Never been so nervous while traveling.  I'm sure my measly 5 cigars is not exactly what customs officials are looking for but I was still a little nervous when we landed back in the states.

I enjoyed a 1990 just a few short days ago... Mmmmmm

Got a Sampler from Thompson Cigar 90 Delux sampler, had the following
2 RP 1990s
2 RP 1992s
2 RP Sun Grown
2 CAO Gold
2 CAO Brazila
2 CAO Italias

Good sampler and it was around 45 bucks, not sure if its still on there or not, but could be worth checking out.
