Beck wants to throw the ball more, and I'm all for it. Martinez improved a great deal between last year and this year as a passer, IMO. If this growth continues, then it'll allow us to use more 4 and 5 WR sets, which I would like to see. This would also open more running lanes for TMart if he can start completing passes in that type of offense.

I'd also like to see, dependent on the growth of our RBs, is a move by Adbullah to WR. Have him be a slot receiver in some of those receiver-heavy sets and get the ball to him in space. Put Rex and Tmart in the backfield, and AA, JT, QE and KB on the edge, and let's see what they can do.

Statistically, Taylor regressed in most passing and rushing categories between his freshman and sophomore years.

Passing
Year School Conf Class    Pos       Cmp      Att      Pct     Yds     Y/A      AY/A    TD    Int    Rate
2010 Nebraska Big 12 FR QB        116       196    59.2   1631     8.3         7.7     10      7    138.8
2011 Nebraska Big Ten SO QB      162       288    56.3   2089     7.3         6.9     13      8    126.5

Rushing
Year School Conf Class Pos      Att     Yds     Avg    TD
2010 Nebraska Big 12 FR QB    162    965     6.0      12
2011 Nebraska Big Ten SO QB  188    874    4.6        9

He threw for more yards, but that was due in part to having nearly 100 more attempts.   The only thing not calculated are the 500+ yards and 25-30 dropped passes that were thrown right in receivers hands this year

I think last year's Texas game matched those numbers......

True that.  The drops were horrible again.  No more BK should help those numbers next year.

Regardless of the stats, the eyeball test shows me that Martinez improved as a passer in year two.  I haven't looked at it but I would guess that his better passing numbers came early in 2010 when we were running the zone read very effectively and that opened up the passing lanes big time.  I think we beat up on some teams early and then Martinez got really bad after his leg injury.  This year he seemed to get better in the passing game throughout the season.  He had a couple of bad throws in the bowl game but overall he passed the ball pretty well against SC.  Don't get me wrong.  He's no John Elway and never will be, but I did see some improvements in his reads, progressions, looking off the safeties, and overall accuracy.  His deep ball to the middle is actually pretty darn good.  His pocket presence needs a ton of improvement, and he still needs to get a lot more accurate on mid to deep sidle line passes.  I don't think we'll see his accuracy and consistency improve much with his throwing motion.  But we've won with worse passers.  It'd help if he can improve his running game.  As we know, he's pretty fast once he gets going but he has no ability to move laterally and that presents as a vulnerability every time he takes off.  With Martinez, we know what we've got and even with some small improvements NU can be in decent shape at QB next season.  Let's hope he continues to get better.

I would say Martinez regressed because he was up against better Defenses over all.  Lets face it, he played against 5 teams in the top 15 in defense this year.

My issues with Tmart are that he will never become exceptional or close to it.  Becks offense, if KU is used as guide, depends on a better than average QB in almost every category.

I do not understand the thinking that says we bring him along and he will just get better. Yes he most likely will  get better, but his QB skills were so low, he will never get  to what we need before he graduates otherwise known as work in progress. The pro's call it a project.

When I see all the QB's in the bowl games and rate Martinez against them, he comes in the 20 percentile.  I would include the Alabama n LSU guys there too.  My question is this:  What is it that we cant have one in the 50 percent group?   Cry

.....But we've won with worse passers.

Not while running this offense. We have when using TO's run heavy option attack that used the power I a lot and threw the ball an average of 10-15 times a game. But, this offense requires more of the QB and Beck reportedly wants to throw it even more. IMO we need to see improvement from Tmart if we want to be at championship level.

TM is a better passer than he gets credit for due to his motion. But you only need to watch Boise State to see what airtight receivers will do for you. Kellen Moore will struggle in the pros with arm strength and accuracy - great college quarterback but his receivers bailed him out a ton by catching anything that was near them.

TM didn't get the same benefit.

I think he will have a break out year next year. He will be able to put together the running, the throwing and running the offense. We saw glimpses at times this year.

Maybe that prediction depends upon whether we get another quarterback, but I doubt it. My sense is that TM is internally motivated.

Disagree on the Moore comparison. Kid may lack velocity on his throws, but accuracy is not a problem.

helenahusker-

Kellen Moore delivers the ball on target and gets the point into the hands.  Big difference.  Lack of arm strength?  You're kidding.

There might be another Kellen Moore out there because the one I've seen is pretty darn good.

Evidently the pollsters dont like BSU without Kellen Moore, because they dont have BSU ranked in the way to early polls.

I think that has more to do with BSU losing their entire DL to graduation.  These are guys that have started and played together for 4 years.  That's going to be a huge loss to overcome.

True, but their luck is about to run out.
