SEC Recruiting

The question of over-signing, as it pertain to the SEC, was a question that I've often had. Based on perception it seems like the SEC, as a conference, turns a blind eye to even the most egregious over-signing.
Alabama has currently:
* 27 commits for their 2012 class.
* 23 commits in their 2011 class.
* 26 commits in their 2010 class.
* 27 commits in their 2009 class.
* 32 commits in their 2008 class.
Note: I used rivals.com as the source.
In a five year period that's a gross of 135 commits. If we remove the 2012 class, that still leaves 108 scholarship players on the roster.
Now we'd have to take into account those players who graduated, left early, and/or never made it to campus for one reason or another, to get a true sense of Alabama's roster.
But based on just glancing at the 85 scholarship limit and noticing that they signed 108 scholarship players...it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand why depth never seems to be an issue at SEC schools.
Things that make you go hmmmm....

During the same period, 2008-2011, Nebraska had a gross total of 90 plays who signed.
That's an 18 scholarship player difference over a four year period.

Then there is this little over-looked tidbit:
SEC Bylaw 14.3.2.1 (page 19), Partial Qualifiers and Non-Qualifiers:
Quote
Men’s sports are permitted to enroll an annual total of four (4) student-athletes classified as partial or non-qualifiers, with no more than two (2) permitted annually in football

From 2008-2011 LSU signed 100 players.
From 2008-2011 Auburn signed 112 players.
Florida is perfect with 85 right on the dot...they also went 6-6 this year. Coincidence?

I can't put my fingers on the thread but as was discussed last year, SEC is changing the rules and regs around this.

I posted this more for my personal edification than anything else.
And I found this to be absolutely priceless:
Quote
Alabama coach Nick Saban lashed out at reporters earlier this week for questioning the signing limit of 28.
Only in the freaking $EC does 85 scholarship limit mean you can sign and have over 100 players on 'ship.
And where was the NCAA on all of this? Looking the other way no doubt. But if Eric Crouch receives a free ham sandwich or Dez Bryant gets his lunch paid for by Deion Sanders, the NCAA is all over it! Man they really do cover the "important" stuff don't they?

A LOT of "Scholarships Not Renewed" (read: "Cut from Roster"), and "Medical Hardship" (read: "Scholarship Paid for by Other Means/ Also Cut from Roster").
Typical SEC.

Holy crap....that is incredibly long, but an exceedingly worthwhile read--thanks Hort!
And this article merely confirms, through actual research, what the numbers at a glance mean--Alabama cheats so blatantly.

Is the 85 limit a farce?

Just got an email from a friend saying that over the last 4 years Alabama, Arkansas and South Carolina have all signed over 100 kids over the last 4 years. That just seems like a bunch of feces. No wonder the SEC does so well, even if you miss on half your class, and you cut them, you over sign so much that the third string guy is better than some starters in other BCS conferences. That shouldn't be allowed if the NCAA is allow about level playing field.

Interesting thread. Crap like this is going on and the NCAA is more worried about scholarhips including "suggested reading books" in their things to attack.

Not just Bama, SC and Arkansas did the same thing. The reason the SEC does so well, they get 5 recruiting classes every 4 years while the rest of the conferences only get 4. Even if you miss on 30% of your class, having what constitutes as an extra class well help ease those misses.

And Urban Meyer carried the unscrupulous SEC recruiting practices to the Big Ten. Bielema and D'Antonio have already filed complaints.

I don't see anything happening with those complaints though. There's no rule against contacting recruits that have indicated they plan to go elsewhere.
