Big Ten Football: Quarterback Rankings for 2012

Quote
3. Taylor Martinez, Nebraska (JR)
Passing Stats: 2,089 yards, 13 TD, 8 INT, 56.3%
Rushing Stats: 188 att., 874 yards, 9 TD

Martinez burst into the hearts and minds of Big Red faithful after 323 yards and five touchdowns in a thrilling 51-41 win over Oklahoma State as a freshman. After a public disagreement with his head coach — and miserable performance on the field against Texas A&M, questioned swirled around T-Magic’s second season. However, as a sophomore, he answered one of the biggest question marks by maturing as a leader and developing mental toughness. The final stage of his growth will come in the form of consistent and accurate passing. His completion rate dipped in year two under center, but his interception rate did too as his yardage totals increased. With his electric ability to pickup yards with his legs, and possibly the top receiving corps in the Big Ten, Martinez should have his eyes set on a monster 2012 campaign. He has won 18 games in his first two years as a starter and a trip to the Big Ten title game will fall to his ability to complete key third-down passes late in close games.

Wow not only did they show TM some love but they said we have "possibly the top receiving corps in the Big Ten".  I def think the potential is there, especially with Westerkamp coming in this year.

I think that's a fair look at Martinez, mentioned some flaws that need to be worked on and the positives he brings to the table.  On the receiving front, I haven't really looked around the league to see who has what coming back, but I definitely love the talent we have returning and the talent coming in!

I know it is all predictions etc..... but I was kind of surprises to see TMart at #3

But what really surprised me I guess was their evaluation of our receiving corps...how many thought we would ever read something like about our receivers?!!  Grin

That's a completely and substantially incorrect representation of the views of this fine messaging board establishment.

Clearly, you did not use enough exclamation points after the words "teh suck"   Wink

They have Kolter way too low.  But overall it looks pretty accurate.

Now that we no longer have to watch BK drop pass after pass, the receiving corps should be one of the tops in the conference.  The coaches have done a great job recruiting these guys.  Now it's up to the players to live up to their potential.

Just about every team in the Big 10 last year had a stud at least one of the WR positions. I thik we generally were ranked at #10 for receivers last year.

Thik about it, the TE's have monster potential. IF Reed is healthy and improves his blocking, and Cotton improves his receiving a tad, they will be quite a duo. Kenny Bell is obviously a deep threat and figures to get better. They might to putting too much stock in Turner. I thik his reputation as a game changer is unwaranted at this time. And I cannot imagine the outside world being too fearful of the other guys we have. I think we have good receiveing RB's but they do not count as they are assessing our receivers.

Will Martinez become the all-time Husker career yardage leader this season?

He currently has 5559 yds.  Barring injury, I say he passes Crouch by game 9.

Top 10 Careers, Total Offense Yards
Player, Pos., Years (Rush/Pass) Total
1. Eric Crouch, QB, 1998-01 (3,434/4,481) 7,915
2. Zac Taylor, QB, 2005-06 (-73/5,850) 5,777
3. Tommie Frazier, QB, 1992-95 (1,955/3,521) 5,476
4. Joe Ganz, QB, 2005-08 (341/5,125) 5,466
5. Jammal Lord, QB, 2000-03 (2,573/2,848) 5,421
6. Jerry Tagge, QB, 1969-71 (579/4,704) 5,283
7. Dave Humm, QB, 1972-74 (-8/5,035) 5,027
8. Steve Taylor, QB, 1985-88 (2,125/2,815) 4,940

A good piece of evidence to show why stats are a huge misnomer.

Huh

What should stats be called?

Or was your use of "misnomer" a misnomer?   Tongue

They should be called "Spats" because that's what they generate.

No kiddin.  Not sure why some want to keep bringing this up.  It proves what?  Anyone on this board think Martinez is going to match Crouch's, Gill's, Frazier's winning percentage as a starter?  And none of the QBs listed started the first game of their freshman season either.  I see the list and there are...let's see... Gill, Taylor, Tagge, Frazier, Crouch... who all led their respective teams to conference championships (and in some cases, national titles).  And bowl game wins.

I hope Martinez can help Nebraska win titles.  And bowl games.  But from what I've seen so far, he's going to have to get better to do that.

It wouldn't hurt if he had the defenses, O-Lines, and stable of running backs that these other qb's had. Oh, he doesn't have quite the same coaching staff either, fwiw.

Taylor Martinez might turn out to be a very good player for NU. I am very excited to see what kind of improvement he has made during the offseason. But to mention him in the same breath as Tommie Frazier and Eric Crouch... that's a bit pre-mature to say the least. He's going to have to show me a heck of a lot more than he has so far for that kind of talk to be taken seriously.

Agree completely. Martinez needs to improve quite a bit before this team is going to seriously contend for anything.
